I visited the Big Island of Hawaii in mid October 2013. I landed in Hilo and stayed at the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC). KMC is located on the grounds of the Hawaii Volcano National Park. There wasn't very much volcanic activity at the time but it was still a great time.
