I had long promised myself that I would go on a road trip when I retired. That time is now.
Starting off in Washington State, we bypassed Oregon completely and stopped for the first night in Yreka, CA. The next day we drove to Monterey and spent 2 nights there.
While in Monterey, we roamed Cannery Row, Carmel, and 17-Mile-Drive.
We then drove down the coast highway to San Luis Obispo. We spent 3 nights there before my wife had to fly home and I continued on alone.
From SLO, I drove to Coalinga and then to Barstow. While driving there, there were a couple of dirt roads that I had to just roam down. To be able to do that added to the spontaneity and wanderlust feeling of the trip.
I spent the night in Barstow and managed to spend some time in an off-road park to the east of town.
From Barstow I hooked on to Route 66. I passed thru Bagdad, Amboy, and Cadiz before returning to I-40.
Back on I-40, I drove to Needles, AZ. before heading north on I-95 and then taking the Oatman Road.
Oatman is a small tourist town in the mountains. It's claim to fame is a group of feral donkey's that roam the town. I rejoined I-40 at Kingman and drove on to Flagstaff.
I spent 3 nights in Flagstaff. I visited the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and Winslow. I then headed north to Moab, Utah.
On the way to Moab, I spent a few hours at Monument Valley. I also tried to take the dirt road to "The Valley of the Gods" but ran out of time.
In Moab, I visited Arches National Park. Awesome!
Then it was 1,100 miles for home.
